Rev. Dr. Karen E. Mosby
Reverend Karen E. Mosby-Avery serves as the Pastor of Pastoral Care and Administration at Second Baptist Church in Evanston. Under the leadership of Senior Pastor, Rev. Mark A. Dennis, Jr., she serves with the pastoral team to facilitate the implementation of the church’s vision to be a “beacon of light” and “a Christ-centered church celebrating faith, freedom, fellowship, stewardship and the social responsibility of caring for souls.”
Prior to joining the pastoral staff at Second Baptist, Rev. Mosby-Avery served as the Director of Contextual Education at Chicago Theological Seminary in Hyde Park. In this position, she worked with Master of Divinity students to coordinate their practical training experiences in preparation for ministries in the church, community, and in the world.
Rev. Mosby-Avery also served for 18 years as the Senior Pastor of Good News Community United Church of Christ, a multicultural, multiracial church in the northside community of Rogers Park in Chicago. Under her pastoral leadership, GNCC expanded its vision and its impact as it moved toward a vision “to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ through transforming ministry to and with our community and our world”.
She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, also in Evanston. In 1985 she was ordained at Second Baptist Church in Evanston under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Dr. Hycel B. Taylor and Rev. Brenda Little.
Her personal vision is to facilitate transformation and growth in the lives of others as they maximize their God-given gifts for faithful living and ministry in the world. God has allowed her to use her gifts of preaching, teaching, and writing in diverse ministry settings within different denominations, within the Chicagoland faith community, and throughout the country. Rev. Mosby-Avery has written articles including contributions to Living Stones in the Household of God: The Legacy and Future of Black Theology, Aspire: The New Women of Color Study Bible, and Sister to Sister Devotions for and from African American Women, Vol. 2.
She is the proud mother of young adult twins, Ayo and Issa.
