The Sojourner Experience | In Detail

Core Principles | More Than Just Another Trip

Faith & Community

Faith and community will be woven into the course through both the mission project and meaningful connections with local teens at Breed Valley School. These opportunities will allow students to see how their values of service, compassion, and solidarity come alive in real-world settings, while also cultivating lasting relationships across borders. Together, these experiences reinforce the central role of faith and community in shaping responsible and engaged leaders.

Self Awareness & Personal Growth

Students will grow in self-awareness and personal development through ongoing dialogue and intentional reflection sessions that span the year-long journey. With the guidance of expert facilitators and educators, participants will be encouraged to examine their own values, identities, and perspectives in light of broader social realities. This process not only strengthens confidence but also equips them with practical tools for navigating complex challenges with clarity and empathy.

Cultural & Historical Experiences

Cultural and historical awareness will be deepened through tailored learning experiences offered both throughout the course and during the culminating trip to South Africa. Students will gain firsthand insight into the histories of struggle and resilience that connect Black Americans and South Africans, while also exploring the beauty and diversity of South African culture. These once-in-a-lifetime opportunities will expand their worldview and encourage them to engage critically and constructively with the global community.

During the school break, they will also lead enrichment activities that nurture creativity and build meaningful relationships with local teens. To further support the school community, students will donate equipment and supplies, offering a tangible expression of solidarity and care. Together, these experiences will ground participants in faith, self-awareness, and cultural understanding, while preparing them to live out empowered, socially engaged leadership in both local and global contexts.

At Every Nation North Church, students will experience the joy of fellowship and worship alongside local youth, strengthening their sense of shared faith across cultural and national boundaries. Through times of prayer, music, and conversation, participants will witness how Christian community is expressed in South Africa and reflect on the similarities and differences with their own experiences at home.
